Compaq should have given you something if you look for it properly.

You should have Windows restore Cd or Operating system Cd (this is white
Cd with letters Operating system only to be distributed with new systems
or something similar).

If it is operating System CD then you can do a clean install in which
case you will lose or your stuff on the PC. If you use their recovery
Cd, again you will lose everything you have done and saved on your HD
but the recovery will be faster.

OS CD takes about 1 hour including installing all drivers etc while
recovery Cd will take 25 minutes and it should reset your system as if
you have just received it from compaq!!

Compaq would know!

If you knew as much as you think you know,
You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!

Compaq often doesn't supply recovery or OS CDs unless you pay for them.

I guess you are about to pay for them now.

I have a similar problem with HP.They don't ship a back up CD of the OS. From
what I'm reading, this is the wave of the future. HP informed me I need a
"recovery kit" (6-8 discs) different from the recovery discthey suggest you
make. The charge was 12.80 but you should be able to talk Compaq/HP into
giving it to you. I made a "recovery disc but when I tried to use it the
message was " incomplete installation try again"

Not me :>

Steve

did you try the F10 recovery? alot of compaq/hp’s have it built in
when the hp/compaq logo is on the screen press f10 and it should
launch the restore application
