Help!! DNS Problem

R

Ron Sparks

I am re-configuring a network with Windows 2000 Server AD, a few XP clients,
1 2000 client and the rest 98 clients. We have a cable modem, connected to
a router. I re-configured the server for DNS and DHCP. The XP clients and
2000 client can connect to the network and the Internet just fine. A few of
the 98 clients can connect to both the network and the Internet, but most of
the 98 clients are not receiving the DNS server IP address from DHCP. I
have two NICs in the server and am using both.
The DNS IP address is 192.....100, the other NIC's IP address is 192....101,
both static. Is there something I am doing wrong? It is very frustating.
In order to get the 98 clients to work, I had to include the DNS server IP
address in the client IP configuration.

Thank you for your help in advance!

my server only has one nic in it. now all my 98 machines
can see the server and i can see them from the server and
everyone can go online. my only problem is the server cant
see any of the xp machines using ping command or in
network neighbor hood. i can ping all other machines from

Make sure WINS is installed on the server. W98 needs it. Also make sure you
have options 044 and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server, Scope options.
You would already have options 003, 006 and 015 in there.

Thank you for the information. I looked at the DHCP configuration and
noticed that in the scopes I did not identify the IP address for the DNS
server. As soon as I configured the scope correctly, the Windows 98
machines connected to the Internet as well as the network.
