Help: Difference between partitions seen by Partition Magic and by Windows

Charles Weppler

I've asked Partition Magic for help on this problem three
times, and received no response. I'm using Windows 98SE
on an HP Pavilion 8575C. Can anybody offer advice on how
to make this work?

I am using Partition Magic 8.0 on a new 120GB hard drive.
I attempted to partition it into thirds. I created a
39077.2 GB primary partition (D:) named 120p1, and an
extended partition containing two logical partitions,
120p2 (E:, 39084.6GB) and 120p3 (F:, 39077.2GB). In
Windows 98SE, Windows Explorer shows four partitions on
this drive, 120p1 (D:), 120p2 (E:), 120p2 (F:), and 120p3
(G:). I am baffled how Windows 98 is coming up with the
extra copy of 120p2. The partinfo I attached is from this
most recent attempt.

When I earlier tried to partition the drive as just one
extended partition containing three logical partitions,
Windows 98 showed five partitions, 120p1 (D:), 120p2 (E:),
120p3 (F:), 120p2 (G:), and 120p3 (H:). I also have a

partinfo from this attempt, which showed partitions 120p1
(D:), 120p2 (G:), and 120p3 (H:). To minimize confusion,
I am not attaching this older partinfo. If it would help
resolve this, I will be happy to send it.

I am running out of things to try. Please advise me how
to fix this.

Charles Weppler

Here's the partinfo from the most recent attempt, with
D: primary and E: and F: logical.

A cylinder calue of 1022 rather than 1023 looks suspicious to me.
It should be, as a result of the LBA to CHS translation, 1023...

Similar 1022 cylinder values are pretty well known from Dell machines:
