Hello,

I seem to be having UI troubles, and I don't know if it's a coincidence
that they started happening after Windows XP service pack 2. Sometimes
I'll get stuck at the pre-login screen upon boot up. The mouse pointer
will move, but no keyboard or mouse input will be recognized, and I'm
unable to click on any user icons to produce the password text field.
Only a hard reset cures this.

Other times, I'll enter my password in the text box, and the system will
freeze on "Loading your personal settings". I have to hard reset here
as well.

Any ideas? I've scanned for viruses.

Thanks,

JM

One thing to look at is a conflict between the mouse driver and the
video card driver. Right click on an empty area of the desktop, choose
Properties | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshoot. Turn down the hardware
acceleration a notch and see if that solves it. If it takes several
notches to cure look at updating the drivers for the mouse and video
card with the latest from the manufacturer's web site.

FYI, I tracked this down to Zone Alarm (Free version). I guess it
doesn't like SP2 very well. Connections were being made my my Avast
virus software before login (as evidenced by popup windows before the
login screen appeared when I installed the free Sygate firewall).
Sygate was buggy with SP2 also (not remembering that I wanted popups
to stop for NETBIOS), so I settled on Kerio, and it's working well so
far. My first clue that Zone Alarm was messed up was that it kept
forgetting that I had granted applications permission to connect.
Maybe it was just corrupted.

Ok, thanks for posting back. I use Sygate Firewall Pro with SP2 and
have had no problems with it, but glad you got things fixed.
