help center keeps starting

i have a customers laptop that with a fresh install of xp pro and all the
updates the help center is running wild. task manager has dozens of help
centers in it. the computer is completely usless. after a long wait, ten
minutes i will get a message that windows cannot find helpctr.exe. when it
is working the help center will open properly and the registry keys look
okay. any ideas????

have tried most all of those. once in a while the computer comes up normally
and is fine. after trying what you suggested i restarted and got the same
thing back. when the computer is working normally help center opens just
fine. just that most all the time it comes up and tries to start the help
center. this time it looks like probably 75 or 80 of them in the task
manager. trying to end task on them doesn't work as the system is not
responsive at that point. the only option seems to be to press the power
button and let the system fight its way down. it will finally tell me that
helpctr.exe a dll failed because the system is shutting down. ok to that
and the system will shut down and i can restart it.

The F1 keyboard key must be stuck.
Click it few times to free it, use an air can
to clean underneath keys.
