HELP! can't view images

I burned alot of my scrapbooking images (.jpeg, .gif,.bmp etc..) to CD to
save space- but when I tried to view them they have been converted to .HMT
files which won't open in my programs now and I can't see them. Can they be
changed back or do I need to restore my computer to a previous date to get
them back?

You *cannot* simply change the extention...
by all means change it back to original.
If you need an image viewer...try the *freeware* Irfanview

(will come up on a Google search)

You said "You *cannot* simply change the extention" ----then why were my
files changed? I went to "Irfanview" web site they don't even list .HMT
extentions as one they work with - they don't even recognize this extention
in a search. I understand this "Highmat" file extention Microsoft had
developed ....but has now been discontinued. It's very hard to get any
answers about it, this discontinued developement/program or whatever it is---
is still working on my system and ruining my images!

Sorry didn't finish in last post... you said---You *cannot* simply change the

I don't know how to change them back to original, if I did I would be able
to see all 346 images and wouldn't be posting questions here.

Change a file to .jpg or whatever it started as and see if it's
readable. If so, you can use the CMD prompt to change all extensions to
..jpg.

REN *.HMT *.JPG

Of course, if some were .gif, .tif, .bmp or another type, they'll need
to be changed again.

It won't help anything to restore your system. Just
write new CDs with a normal CD writing program and
remember to avoid Microsoft software in the future
whenever possible. (And I don't mean that as a joke.)

There are a couple of links here for info.:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HighMAT
http://filext.com/file-extension/HMT

But it's not clear whether an HMT can be converted
back to anything usable. It seems to be meant to
be used as formatting in the CD write.

If the files were simply renamed, they can easily be renamed back...
but if the format was changed entirely...then the files are useless
and you need to use different software
