thanks for suggestion. I tried that - it ran & said it was successful but nothing happened.

Hmmm then you have to check the registry:

Make sure you have:

Start | Run | regedit | OK navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif

Make sure on the right you have:

Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: giffile

Name: Content Type
Type: REG_SZ
Data: image\gif

AND NOTHING ELSE under this key. That should get it going for you.

I tried that
I had to add the content type entry but it didnt do anything - there was a folder called giffile in there is that ok - i left it there

Hi

You don't see the attachment because you are using the Web interface that
Microsoft provides to the newsgroups. If you had used a newsreader
instead (e.g. Outlook Express), you would have seen the attachment.

Here is the content of the registry file thumbnail.reg that Steve posted:

REGEDIT4

Hi

From the header information in post from zacarius:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

That means no support for viewing or adding attachments...

Unless your giffile key is messed up you have done all that is necessary. I doubt your giffile key is messed up. We need to look at two more things.

1) You have Explorer set to Webview.
Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options... | General | Enable Web Content in folders must be selected. Not classic view.

2) The key(s) in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TridentImageExtractor

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}\InProcServer32
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %SystemRoot%\system32\browseui.dll

Name: ThreadingModel
Tyep: REG_SZ
Data: Both

And try Start | Run | regsvr32 browseui.dll | OK | OK for good measure.

Make sure you have:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif\ShellEx

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}

It is the CLSID right above which gives image preview in Windows Explorer.

thanks that worked & yes you are right i was - i then checked out how to log onto the newsgroup through outlook express but must say that the web viewer through browser is much nicer to use.

Anyway thanks am happy chirpie chick now with gifs i can view as thumbnails.

Cheers

Registering thumbvw.dll should have done all that shouldn't it have Torgeir? If not I will no longer suggest that.

Hi

If I mess with some of the registry keys/values that is listed
in that registry file, registering thumbvw.dll does not repair
the damage for me.

Dunno if you have found a solution yet, but when I had the same problem, I
located the solution here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;243401&Product=win2000

I did the same process for .gif files, as they too stopped showing. I had
recently reinstalled Office 2K, and apparently it was something related to
that, and PhotoEd somehow not being installed correctly. Not sure why, since
it worked fine, but who knows? In any event, the process did indeed fix this
issue.
