I am desparate. After 7 hours with MS tech people, we decidied I should
reistall XP. A big part of the problem was that my SP2 ininstall file is
missing. SP2 is not in the Add Remove list, so I can't just remove it.

Fine. So I spent hours backing up EVERYTHING, then put my XP disk in and got
an error message that told me a newer version of XP is on my computer, so it
won;t install XP. I should get rid of the newer version. If only I could!!

How do I get XP to install fresh if I can't uninstall SP2?

Did you boot from the Windows XP CD? If so, it should give you the option
to delete the partition.

Hi Larry,

In the install process select the partition you want to install
WinXP on and choose format. This will wipe all the data from
that partition and a clean install can be preformed.

To do a clean install boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you
delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting
the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new
install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these to your new install before connecting
to any network.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
