help - can't open any programmes

My friend has obviously got a virus on his computer which
won't allow him to open any programmes which can help fix
the problem. Does anyone know what kind of virus/worm
etc may be causing this??? It also shuts the computer
down every so often, can still access Office programmes,
but not explorer, antivirus etc.

A Norton Antivirus CD is bootable. Put it into your CD
drive and boot. Then ask the program to scan your entire
hard drive.

Thanks Richard. I tried this option, but the programme
can't open so I can't run a scan. Any other ideas???

I don't understand? If you boot from a CD you take your
hard drive out of the equation. It's just your computer
memory and CD which are working. If your CD Drive is OK
then this should work. Make sure your ROM BIOS is set to
BOOT from the CD. Check this by going into the low level
setup as soon as you turn on your computer(usually by
pressing delete or ESC)
