[HELP] Bloodhound? Sasser?

Hi, I have been reading lots about the sasser worm but all info comments on
the shutting down aspect. My laptop tells me a bloodhound virus has been
detected and then freezes with the NAV dialogue window open. I can't connect
to web, can't open any programmes (so can't do anything on my laptop
fullstop) and have to do hard shutdown as it won't allow me to shutdown. it
sounds like the sasser but is it a different variant? And how will I get
into my start menu to follow the microsoft instructions if the dialogue box
is there as soon as the laptop loads? Any help much appreciated.

Hi Deno,

Sasser causes a box to appear saying your system will be shut down in 30
seconds. Various other worms also cause this, though. If your system is
simply freezing, chances are it could be something else.

"Bloodhound" is unfortunately generic as suggested by its name. It's NAV's
attempt to "sniff out" potential viruses. So, what do you do now? As if a
real-life doctor said that you have an unknown illness, get a second
opinion.

You may have to go into safe mode to do this. For instructions on how to do
this, see here:

If you need any help once you get the results of these scans, feel free to

Hi Trafton

Thanks so much. I haven't been able to do anything yet as I am at work.
While I am in safe mode will I be able to connect to the internet so I can
run those virus checkers?

Thanks

Hi Trafton

Thanks for your post. I carried out your instructions. In the end had to
download and manually install adaware, spybot, removal tools and stinger etc
as my internet connection was too slow. I have updated my patches etc. Got
rid of worms and spyware. Have increasingly had problems shutting down (had
to do hard shutdowns) and errors on starting. As of the weekend when I was
about to enable my system restore (after being in safe mode using stinger to
delete some infected files missed by other virus scans) my laptop started
hanging during start up. It hangs on black screen with windows xp icon and
loading bar flashing. I have tried restarting with last working
configuration. This worked once but when I had to restart again it now
longer works. What to do?? I can still boot into safe mode...
As I am a writer and primarily use my laptop to write I have decided to
terminate my internet connection. Will do my research at internet cafes and
let them deal with all the security!
