Tim

hi friends,

perhaps someone can help me. i did a cold shutdown on my
son's pc, running win2k, while it was in standby. i know,
it was stupid.

now, i cannot boot at all. the only message on the screen
is that the pc is in power save mode and i should move
the mouse or press any key. neither of these moves works.

my son is using a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard,
which probably makes it worse (not sure what
functionality if any is available from the mouse,
keyboard before the system fully boots).

i can get this screen message again and again by pressing
the power button on the monitor but i can get no further.
shutting down and connecting a straight cable type
keyboard and mouse has not helped us either.

also tried to boot from a diskette or CD, this does not
work either.

the system is somehow locked in power save mode. ANY help
you can give me would be most appreciated.

many thanks in advance,
tim

What happens if you boot safe mode?

Dave, thanks for your message. I can't even get anywhere
near a boot menu. System is frozen in the state
described. No function keys working, no keyboard or mouse
inputs accepted. Just the power save message as described!

Unplug for a while?

Dave, a good tip as well. Tried this one several times to
no avail. Shut down for a while, removed all electrical,
etc. System still does not budge from the frozen state.
thanks again.

Is this a laptop? If so you may need to remove the battery.

Push the power button for 10 secs. The system should shut
down.

i've readed all replies and i can not understand it. i think probably the
mother board is blocked.

can you try to remove the motherboard battery. is a little battery (like
battery in a calculator) of 3,2 V for 2 hours.

when you restart pc once reinstalled battery probably a cmos error will be
shown.

if you enter cmos and load bios defaults and then save and exit i think it
will run.
may be you must detect hard disk on standard options (bios)

First, try using a standard mouse and keyboard. The wireless ones
caused many problems where I used to work.

Second, unplug (not just turn off!) the machine and discharge the CMOS
memory. Usually there is a three-pin header that has a jumper on 1-2.
Move the jumper to 2-3 for a second and then back to 1-2. Boot and
reenter your settings and the time and date, etc.

Third, strip all cards out of the machine except a display card if its
not integrated into the mobo. Leave some memory in. The machine should
boot, at least enought to run the BIOS setup.

Fourth, Find the ATX power supply spec on www.intel.com . This will
tell what voltages should be on which pins of the main power connector.
Check these.

Fifth, sometimes the power button logic fails and won't command the
power supply to turn on. One pin of the power connector (IIRC 4th from
one end, green wire) needs to be grounded to do this. You can fashion a
jumper from a paper clip to connect this wire to the black ground wire
next to it.

Sixth, either your CPU is dead (no likely) or your mobo died. Maybe
you can substitute in a different machine. Or, for about $30 you can
buy a cheap mobo just for the purpose of testing your CPU and power
supply. A really nice mobo will cost you about $150. If you go that
route, you will probably get sucked into buying a fast CPU and more
memory. At that point it's just plain easier and faster to buy a new
computer and install your old hard disk in it where you can copy files
from it.
