Help - Can only log into an admin account

I am running windows XP Pro and can only log into an account if it is an
administrator account. As soon as I change the account to a User or Power
User, I can no longer log in. The account is still there, but the password
is not accepted. If I change it back to an Administrator account, then I can
log in again. What settings should I check?
Thanks for the help!

What exactly happens and what error message if any do you get? My guess is
that it says you can not logon interactively? If that is the case open Local
Security Policy [secpol.msc] and go to local policies/user rights and add
users or everyone to the user right to logon locally. Run the command
gpupdate or reboot if you do reconfigure your user rights. --- Steve

The only error message I get is that the password is wrong. I checked the
security policy and under user rights/log on locally, I alrady have
administrator, power user, and user.

Is there some other setting i can try?

Thanks.

The password for a user should be unique to that user and not matter what
group the user is in. The error message indicates that the wrong password is
being used or perhaps cap lock is enabled or even you have a
defective/sticky key on the keyboard. Remember passwords are case sensitive.
Try changing or resetting the password and try again too see if that works
or not. The security log that you can access via Event Viewer may provide
some more info on why the logon failed. --- Steve

I don't think the problem is typing in the wrong password. Right now there
are two accounts and they are both set up as administrators. If I am logged
into account1 and change account2 to power user or user, then I try to use
use fast user switching to log in to account2, I get the message that the
password is incorrect. If I go back to account1 and change account2 back to
an administrator, then use fast user swithcing to log into account2, it
works. I have tried this many timess. so I don't think it is due to a
mistyped password. I think it a setting that is wrong. Does anyone have any
ideas as to which settings I should check?
Thanks.

Damien,
I left my computer during a large download, came back to computer in
"hibernation".
New computer, only myself as administrator, no other users.
Does not recognize my password.
Son says one time his did that (XP Pro also) and he typed in his
password backwards ... it worked.
Thinking it's coincidence when it DOES work, timing with whatever setting is
messed up...
Any ideas for me?
