Actually, I am just hearing sounds. I have 20 years with computers. I just reinstalled XP onto my Delll laptop. Somehow I have activated a particular sound - it is 2 successive chimes that occur, sometimes repeatedly, when I am inside any number of applications. For exapmle, during this posting it has occured - always in pairs about 6 times with about a minute in between. I have only put several programs on my computer since flushing the drive. I think that it is coming from XP and not from excel or DeLorme. I get the impression that it is related to a background task that Windows is performing - maybe a disk access. It is driving me crazy...........

My popup blocker will chime (until I disabled that noise).

I'm thinking the MSN Messenger Contact Online sound.

You can go to the Sounds tab in Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices and
start selecting sounds in the Program Events list. Scroll through the list
and use the little play button to hear them.

That should identify what is happening to cause the sound you're hearing.

Try Control Panel (classic view)> Sounds and Audio. Click on the Sounds tab
and scroll through the events. Check the sound assigned to each one using
the preview button. Hopefully you'll find the program and event that is
chiming at you. If yes, you can try changing the sound to "None" or another
choice from here. If no luck, open the main program and use its menus to
change the sound choices.
