Headings for Index

I have several documents with indexes of entries using different
formats/templates.
Some of these have an alphabetic heading (e.g. --A--)before each group of
entries, for example:

--A--
apple 12
apricot 8

--B--
banana 3

Others do not have any headings.

Does anyone know where to find the option that toggles these headings on and
off?

Thanks
Roger

Some of the index styles include such headings, but you can also add them
manually to the INDEX field using an \h switch. See the Help topic "Field
codes: Index field" for more information.

Thanks. That does what I was looking for.

Incidentally do you (or anyone else) know if it is possible to edit the
format (colour, or font) of the heading or to apply such a heading to the
second level of items in the index?

For the first, I tried just changing the format of the field code directly
(i.e. the "--A--" part), but no luck.

Thanks again
Roger

I can answer my own question. I just had to edit the style called "Index
Heading" to change the format. Obvious really.
