headers

I'm trying to setup a template in WORD. I want a header on the first page
and a footer on all pages. How do I do this?

I setup the first page header, but where and how do I find the subsequent
page headers? The template has only one page. I don't see where I can add or
insert pages.

Lastly, if I create a document(s) from one template, then later edit that
template, will the changes propogate through all docs or do I need to update
in some way?

thanks!

Hi Shank,

Go to the end of that first page and press Ctrl+Enter. This will insert a
manual page break. Create the second page headers and footers, then delete the
page break. Word will remember what you defined, even if you can't see it until
additional pages are generated while typing.
Lastly, if I create a document(s) from one template, then later edit that
template, will the changes propogate through all docs or do I need to update
in some way?
No. The only thing that can, possibly, propagate are style definitions. Nothing
else. AutoText entries, macros, toolbars and keyboard assignments would also
"shine through" (not propagate, as that implies the objects actually being IN
the documents). Changing anything else (such as margins) would require a macro
solution.

Go to the end of your template, use the menu INSERT BREAK, PAGE BREAK.
Be sure you are in the second page of your template and use the menu
VIEW, HEADER & FOOTER. Find the buttons with the little arrowheads. You
should be able to move between the first page header and the header
with those buttons.

The above assumes that you have properly use the "Use different first
page" header/footer button on the PAGE SETUP, LAYOUT menu. Word
assumes that if you click the button that *both* a separate 1st page
header *and* footer will be used. You can't specify only a 1st page
header, but uniform footer.

Almost there....

I put a logo on the first page that requires the header to be 1.5" high. I
just want the company name on subsequent pages, which requires the header
only be .5" high. I have the logo in place and also the company name. But
when I change the vertical height of one header, the other also changes. How
can I get them to be totally independent?

thanks!

You want First Page header turned on. Use content to determine it's size
rather than resetting the header margins.

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.
http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm This gives step-by-step
instructions. (It also has the following links)

You want First Page header turned on. Use content to determine it's sizeThat helped! However, now how do I set different margins for different pages
in a template? I want the first page to have a 2" margin and all other pages
to have a 1" top margin. How do I get that done?

thanks!

Shank,

Study Suzanne's Letterhead.htm document in minute detail!
There will be a test tomorrow.

That is covered in the links I gave you. You do _not_ change the margins,
you use something to simulate margins that takes up space, like your
graphic, set to wrap text.

I read through that painful mess of overkill and still have not found an
answer for changing margins.
I switched to PageMaker - no issues there!

It is not a mess, but a very comprehensive article on a difficult subject.
And it does give you the answer. Enjoy PageMaker. It is a wonderful program,
but not very practical for producing letters in an office environment.

Stop it! After I figured out how to do two different headers, the actual
steps could have been broken down to a half-dozen or so bullet items. That's
all that's needed. For those that would like to wonder off into drifting
thoughts, you could have put the other 22 paragraphs of creative writing at
the bottom of the page. It was not my intention to insult.
Live well!

I believe you were (or should have been) initially referred to the "More
complex letterhead" section, which addresses your issue.
