In an excel spreadsheet, there is what appears to be a header but it isn't
typed into an actual cell. I'm unable to reach it by double clicking. What
is it? How do I get rid of it or edit it?

Provide more detail about what you have. You say it does not appear to be
typed in an actual cell. Why do you say that? What does it look like?
What do the neighboring cells look like. HTH Otto

The heading that is typed on the first row looks as if it's behind the first
row cells. In other words I could type over the heading in the first row and
the original heading still be there.

Can you post this spreadsheet somewhere on the web where we can retrieve it?

An alternative is to post your e-mail address here and allow someone to send
you theirs, so that you can then e-mail the spreadsheet to one person.
