I am working with Word 2002 and can't display Header/Footer toolbar. I've
gone into option/customize but it won't let me click on the Header/Footer
box. Any solutions gratefully received.

Hi Gill-

The features of the H/F tolbar are useless unless you are active in the H/F
'layer' of the doc, so this is one of the bars that cannot simply be turned
on/off at will. When you go to View>Header and Footer, the bar will
automatically appear and will disappear when you go back to the text layer.

If you are in the H/F and go into the Customize dialog box , the bar will be
listed & checked, but you cannot change the setting.

Hi there - I was already working in the H/F 'layer' and it still didn't work
and the box wasn't checked. No tool bar appears when I click on H/F and I
can't switch between H/F without scrolling down the page. Any ideas?

Try this:

Go to Header/Footer, then Tools>Customize>Toolbars and click on the name of
the Headers and Footers bar. Click the Reset button & OK to confirm, then
Close the dialog box. If the bar still doesn't show up, Exit from Word &
relaunch to see if tha does it.

I found this happened sometimes on specific documents that may have had
some type of field inserted at some point. Even so, I was still able
to access if there was already something in the header or footer area
by doubleclicking in that area, at which point the Header/Footer
toolbar would properly appear. Suspect some kind of corruption.

My workaround was to display the Forms toolbar (View > Toolbars >
Forms), protect the document by click on the padlock icon, and then
unprotecting the document by toggling the padlock icon again. Once I
did that, when I selected View > Header/Footer, the Header/Footer
toolbar appeared as usual.
