hdl.dll missing need to reinstall?? but how?

I checked all the messages didn't quite find a solution.

when I boot up into the screen where it says chose your operating
system, i used to be able to chose to go into 98, or XP. however, now
when I chose XP it will show I can chose Safe mode, safe mode with
command.. blah blah blah but none of them I can get into, it shows
hdl.dll missing, please reinstall.

tried to check my boot.ini, and the boot path looks right to me. no
changes made for a while...
I went into recovery console to expand the halacpi.dll from Windows XP
CD to replace the hdl.dll at d:\windows\system32 and when i reboot it
still shows it's missing...

when I checked under windows\system32\setup.log it shows hdl.dll is
installed even tho the line show different from
\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll = "halacpi.dll","1a769"
as suggested from one posting say it should look like. if I just
changed the log in notepad would that help or HOW do i reinstall this
hdl.dll thing .. again???

the configuration goes like this.
98 on C:\ (working fine)
XP Pro on D:\ (access denied!!)

I installed another XP on E:\ after I can not seem to get in to the
D:\ anymore and this one is working fine, but I rather be able to get
into the old XP since it has all the softwares installed already.

Please help. I will try anything... scratching my head.. losing
hair...

i dont even try loading more than one os per computer anymore because of
this type of thing

you could try saving your work from e: then removing it, then doing a
repair install on the d:. i guess saving the d: is the main goal. am not
sure if the win98 will still work but you can always reinstall it if you
wanted
