Hi Alan,
What make this Laptop and does it a new alptop or an Old one?
This error as it is it can refer to many things, like an database
application configured to start up and pulling data from the Database built
for it and can;t access that data from the Hive assigned to it in the
registry.
Also make sure the machine clean from malware and viruses and you can
Perform a System restore to an earlier stage when things were working okay.
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] on the registry editor locate these keys and click
on each of them and look in the Right Pane/Window, what you see there?.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce =
"c:\apps\HDreg\HDRegapp" <= do you see this entry there?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run =
"c:\apps\HDreg\HDRegapp" <= do you see this entry there?

Does this Packard Bell machine by any chance?.

Have a look in the event Viewer for any error messages (X) relate to
Hardware or software malfunctioning.
