HD & DC RW setup

I have an old system that I would like to setup for my grandkids to use.
The system has a Seagate HD model ST3240014A connected on one cable and a
CD-RW on separate cable. It appears that one of the HD controller
connections on the MB is not working since when I connect either the CD-RW
or the HD to it the system says the cable is bad. I have tried two cables
with the same results but when I hook either cable to the other HD
controller connector they work just find.

Given that I am now trying to hook both of the devises to the same cable to
the connection that is working. If I connect the HD to either the first or
second connector spot on the cable it works. However, if I connect the
CD-RW to the end position of the cable the system does not recognize the
HD. I am guessing that it might be that the HD needs to be configured as
master/slave different that what I currently have it. As it stands now, the
connector connects the first set of pins at the far right of the HD when
viewed from the back.

I would appreciate if anyone could tell me if connecting a HD and CD-RW to
the same cable is possible and if so how should the pin be configured.

Different harddrives and CD drives select Master/Slave differently. Most,
but not all, when you look at the pins/jumpers have labels: M=master,
S=slave, C= cable select. (Look around closely for the labels.) Also, some
harddrives have diagrams with jumper settings. If necesary, check the
manufacturer's web site,

Anyway, the device connected on the end of the cable is supposed to be
jumpered as Master and the middle connector is to be jumpered as Slave.
Also, connecting a harddrive and a CD drive on the same cable will reult in
the harddrive running at the slower speed of the CD drive.

Yes it's possible, but you'll have to find out which set of pins you need
jumpered for your particular hard drive as Master... and then set the CD as
Slave. Visit the hard drive manufacturer's website and check there.

The end of the ribbon cable with middle and end are closest are where the
ide devices are plugged in. The other extreme end goes to the motherboard.
Master device on the end, slave device in the middle. Cable select for both
devices, same connection. You want the hard drive as master.
CD roms are self-explanatory if you read the label on the end where the
connectors are for master/slave/cable select for jumper setting. Hard
drives are manufacturer specific, and may have a label on the top of the
hard drive indicating the master/slave/cable select jumper setting.
Seagate has a website for finding this, if not.
