Having trouble creating a VPN connectoid

D

David D.

Win 2000 SP4 5.00.2195.

I am trying to create a VPN connectoid on my friend's computer.

We both have the same version OS. We both have a LAN connection to a
Cable/DSL router with broadband internet access.

When I click on "Make New Connection" on my computer, I get a choice of
connection types.

On my friend's computer, however, when I click on "Make New Connection", the
only option is a dial-up connection.

What are my next steps to enabling his VPN connection though the LAN?

Your friend has to install a network adapter in his PC.

He has one. He has a working ethernet LAN and cable-modem. He has a
working connection to the LAN and has no problems getting to the Internet
through it. If I click on its connectoid's properties, it looks like a
normal LAN connection with the standard protocols, etc.

But when I click on "Make New Connection", it only offers me a dialup
connection.

VPN *is* a Dialup Connection Technology. It is a dialup connection. It
just uses the VPN Adapter in place of the modem and uses the target's IP# in
place of the Phone number.

Phillip,

VPN was initially only for dialup connections, but now works over any
WAN connection. It is basically a tunneling protocol, irrespective of the
type of physical connection.

On my laptop, which runs Windows XP Home, I just create a connectoid,
select VPN, and it works over my existing default LAN/WAN connection. I
connect to a VPN server via my home LAN->router->cable modem.

My Win2000 desktop is also configured that way.

However, on my friend's Win2000 PC, I do not even get the option to
create such a connectoid. He has an existing ethernet LAN connectoid, but
"Create new connection" only offers me a dialup choice.

It has been a long time since I set up my desktop's VPN connectoid. It
is possible that I used a proprietory client, but I do not think so. I
think that it is OS supported. It is definitely OS supported under XP.

Thank you for your responses. I am still hopeful that I will be able to
make the connection that I need.

I would uninstall all network components, then re-install them.

I suspected that it might come down to that. I was hesitant because the
computer doubles as my friend's household server, and I do not want to
disable anyone because I run into an adaptor driver issue. I'll just need
to make sure that I locate what I will need in advance.

Thanks for your assistance.

Uninstalling & reinstalling network components is easy
under Win2000. At worst you will need this:
- The Win2000 installation CD.
- The driver file for the network adapter.

Chances are you won't need either.
