Have XP Home/SP2, want to install XP Pro/SP1

I'm running XP Home with Service Pack 2 and want to upgrade to XP Pro.
What are the gotchas? I presume if I wait long enough XP Pro CDs will
appear in the retail channel with SP2 already included, but what if I
want to upgrade now? Am I not likely to only be able to purchase XP
Pro that's only current to SP1? How badly will I regret an XP Home/SP2
to XP Pro/SP1 upgrade

Replies to the NG only, please.

Thanks, DT

Hi

If you go that route, you will have to reinstall SP2 after 'upgrading' to XP
Pro SP1. However, you can create a slipstream SP2 CD using the XP Pro CD.
This means that you can upgrade from XP Home SP2 to XP Pro SP2. You will
need to download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

or if you have an SP2 CD, copy the xpsp2.exe file from that onto your hard
disk/partition.

Then follow the directions in the following article:

You don't say what you need that the Home edition doesn't have.

If you really want to do that 'upgrade' it seems to me the easiest approach
would be to slipstream the SP2 update into WINXP Pro and use that for the
update. I am not sure but it may be possible to upgrade to the Pro edition
by simply doing a 'repair'. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

It would be logical to acssume that all recent editions of WINXP Pro will
have the SP2 update incorporated. The pack is bound to say.

You should be seeing the Windows XP Home and Professional products in the
retail channel now with a big flash on the box in the upper left corner
telling you that this product has SP2 included.

Thanks, chaps. Very useful stuff. "Slipstreaming" is new to me but it
certainly seems like the way to go.

I want XP Pro in order to be able to run Virtual PC, and I want to run
Virtual PC so that I can set up a dedicated "machine" just for web
browsing that I can blow away and replace easily if it ever gets sick
from malware.

Only do it is you need one of the specific facilities that are in Pro
only. Otherwise the systems are identical. To upgrade you need either
a Pro Upgrade CD with SP2 included (these are now coming through retail;
I understand the box has a flash about 'New Security'). Or make one by
'slipstreaming a full SP2 from its CD or full download into an existing
Pro Upgrade CD. Or - in principle - uninstall SP 2, but that seem the
fraught approach
