Hi liklikfromdownunder,
If you have tried booting while pressing
the F8 key and then choosing Last Known Good Configuration from the menu
that appears and that doesn't work. Then, I don't know how to mend this
current state. . However to get back to a working user account. Start
computer in 'safe mode' and go into the Administrator account. From here
you can create a new user account based on 'default' settings. Do this by
going into 'Control Panel' and selecting 'User Accounts' and choose 'Create
New Account' .
While in Administrator, move contents of the folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<bad user>\My Documents

....to the shared documents folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

So you will be able to access them in the new account.

Reboot into the new account.

Move your files back from the shared documents folder to your own My Docs
folder.
Let us know how you get on if you decide this is for you.

Desktop Icons and the Taskbar Fail to Load at Startup

This problem may be fixed by using one of these 5 repairs.

(1) Check that this policy is not enabled:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDesktop"=hex:00,00,00,00

(2) Restore a Missing "userinit" Registry Value:

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad:

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\userinit.exe,"

----------copy inside only----------

2. If your Windows is not on drive C: replace C: with your Windows
drive letter and Save-As Userinit.reg (or any name + .reg).
3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.
4. Restart.

(3) Delete an Incorrect "Explorer.Exe" Entry in the Registry:

1. Open the Run box and enter: regedit
2. Go to this key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options]
3. If you see "explorer.exe" as a subkey below, delete it.
4. Restart.

(4) Restore a Missing "explorer.exe" Entry in the Registry:

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad:

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Shell"="explorer.exe"

----------copy inside only----------

2. Save-As WinLogon.reg (or any name + .reg).
3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.
4. Restart.

(5) If Exlorer.exe is Missing:

If explorer.exe is not in C:\WINDOWS\ then insert your Windows CD and,
using the 'Task Manager' (File -> New Task), run the 'System File Checker'
utility with this command: sfc /scannow

If the 'System File Checker' didn't replace it, boot to the Recovery Console
with the Windows CD and copy explorer.exe manually:

1. Insert the Windows CD and restart.
2. When setup begins, choose the "Repair or Recover" option by pressing "R".
3. Once at the command prompt, enter:
expand D:\i386 /F:EXPLORER.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /y
(D: is the CD drive letter, C: is the Windows partition, change if necessary
4. To exit the Recovery Console, type: exit.

If the desktop still does not load then, from within the Task Manager, run a new
task to open the Registry Editor:
regedit.exe
and check the registry data from above, adding as necessary if it is missing or
incorrect.

Although the above posts may apply, don't forget the simple things. The
problem may be as simple as somebody setting the desktop to not show icons.
(I've run into this before.)

Right-click on the desktop, select "Arrange Icons By" and ensure that "Show
Desktop Icons" is checked.

Hi Gary,
The OP has not replied, but I got the impression by what he said
that there was a MAJOR problem with the configuration of this user account.
Not just that there were no icons. He says, in his [very] short post, that
it is like the default screensaver. By that, I think he means scrnsave.scr
(which is just black) and not logon.scr which IS the default (but I very
much doubt he means that he has a 'floating Windows XP' on his desktop!) So
you see, There are no icons, no taskbar, no start menu - nothing. So that
is why I gave the advice that I did.
Perhaps, it would have been more sensible of me to have asked for more
information, God knows, we need it!

I'm having a similar problem. After pressing ctr+alt+del i try to run regedit
but it says it can't be found. i can run my anti virus program and perform a
scan but it is clean.

I've been trying to sort this for ages so any advice would be much
appreciated.....

if you have no tool bars and icons, how are you running your AV
program?

What is a default screen saver? Do you mean wallpaper?

If you can get into Task Manager, see if explorer.exe is listed in the
Task Manager Processes.

If it is not, start it with File, New Task, explorer.exe

That may get your stuff back long enough to find the real problem(s)
(explorer not running).
