have lost 'grid/outline' of labels. How do I recover?

When typing labels the 'grid/outline' of the labels is no longer visible.
There is only a little 'box' in the upper left corner. The label will print
correctly (if I can manage to get it on the right label), but can be quite
confusing. How can I recover the outline? Thanks.

Table > Show Gridlines.
