Hello.
I want to be able to connect 2 computers to one broadband internet line. I'm
going to get a ADSL 'broadband' internet service over the telephone line and
I want to be able to connect 2 computers to, so that they share the same
service.
I have been told that a device called a router acts as both a broadband
modem and network device, allowing you to connect 4 computers to it, so that
they can share the same internet connection and allowing them to share each
others hard drive.

So I went into my local PC World, looked at the network section and bought
the Netgear DG632 Modem Router assuming that this was once such device.
However when I actually got it home and got it out of the box it looks as if
I hade a big mistake. It seems to be just a modem. There are no sockets to
connect more than one computer to it. There is a socket it to connect it to
the telephone line, ONE computer, and a gaming console.
Does anyone have any experience with this device. Is it just a glorified
modem? If I want to connect 2 computers to it, do I need to buy something
else?
Its just I saw the word Router and assumed that it would be a networking
device allowing me to connect more than one computer to it allowing them to
share the same internet connection.
But it seems I was wrong.

I have a Linksys model BEFSR41 version 3 Etherfast Cable/DSL Router with
4-port switch. It hooks between the cable modem and four computers. Allows
four different system to connect independently to the web and to be in a
network with each other.

Mike,

The DG632 is a combination ADSL modem and NAT router, with just one Ethernet
port. Most popular NAT routers include an Ethernet switch, which gives you
multiple ports.

Just go back PC World and get an Ethernet switch, that will run you $10 or so.
Other than that, the DG632 is as good as any NAT router.
