Remove any and all printer drivers currently installed for the printer.
You might have to do it twice. (Start Printers and faxes_

There are no Windows XP drivers for this printer on Canon's site. So,
you must have downloaded the divers for windows 3.xx or 9x. There will
not install. If you manage to force the files to be copied to your
computer's hard drive, the driver will not work with XP.

There is a printer-check utility. I don't know what information it
gives, but it might be useful sometime even if not now.

The Windows XP distribution media has a driver for this printer.

Try connecting the printer to the computer. If it connects by parallel
port rather than USB, make sure the cable is IEEE certified or IEEE
compliant. Then turn on the computer and printer and allow Windows XP to
start. If the printer is not detected and drivers installed, run the
Add a printer wizard from Start Printers and faxes.

It would help to know the complete text of any or all error messages if
there are any.

Let us know.
