have 1gb of hd space missing - help please

Hi,

hen i right-click on my hard drive and go to properties, the pie chart
shows that i have 3.88gb used and 2.14gb free space. However, when i open
up the hard drive folder, highlight everything there and right-click for
properties, it says only 2.88gb are being used. I've had discrepencies
before in Windows 98, which were easily fixed with Scandisk which reported
the difference as lost files/directories and let me delete them, however,
the size was at most a few hundred mb and the error-checking facility in
WinXP (which I've just upgraded to) finds no prroblem. Any help is
appreciated.
