Has someone "hijacked" my POP3 email?

Strange things have been happening...

I use Outlook to download my POP3 mail from my service at mail.lycos.com. I also use Norton Antivirus which seems to do a good job at scanning mail coming and going.

However, I noticed about a month ago, that every time I tried downloading mail, mail icons "flash" on and off in my system tray as though something was being downloaded or transmitted - but nothing registers in my inbox or outbox. After this occurs for a majority of the download time, mail icons that persist for a short time in my system tray appear as though Norton Antivirus were checking them.

Also, in my lycos email account, I've been getting MAIL DAEMON responses from domains such as outblaze.com and awaytogetadate.com saying that they couldn't deliver my emails. Problem is, I've never sent email to those domains.

What's the deal? Has my email account/service been "hijacked" somehow? Have my Outlook settings been tampered with? I would appreciate any useful feedback.

Someone that you have had e-mail communications with has picked up a worm or
virus and is using your e-mail address to send out more of the same. Since
the messages can't be delivered, the items are returned to you because the
original message was tagged with your e-mail address.

There really isn't anything you can do about this except if it gets to be so
bad is to see if your ISP will/can change your e-mail address.

ps - you may here IT folks call this spoofing the sender's email address.
