my hp pavilion has packed in, the green light on the power unit turn
on then straight off, does this mean that the power supply need
replacing, any help greatly appreciate

Either the PSU, or less likely the motherboard, has failed. The easiest
thing to try is to replace the PSU with a known working one and see if that
fixes it first.
