Hardware wizard not recognising new sound card

I put a new sound card in my sons Desktop
http://usa.aopen.com/Products/sound/cobraaw840.htm I got it free from a
co-worker. I downloaded the driver pack off of the web site. I removed the
old sound card and put in the new one, restarted PC and nothing... no "Found
new hardware" etc. it still showed the old device / driver etc. I tried
installing the new software but it said "No A-Open sound device found, you
must have this to install this software" (so that tells me I didn't need to
install it first as I thought might be the problem) What is the proper
procedure for installing a new sound card? (I tried Google, manf. web site,
couldn't find) Thanks

Could the reason the sound card was "free" possibly be because it was
defective?

I thought of that but it seems that at least the wizard would recognize it?

That depends what is wrong with it, wouldn't you say? If it just totally did
not work at all and was essentially an inert lump of plastic and metal then
how would the computer "recognize" it?

But we're getting ahead of ourselves, it may not be that this is the problem
at all. Have you tried deleting the old sound card entries in the device
manager?

It seems far more odd to me that you say you removed the old card but it
still shows up in device manager than it does that a 'new' card might not be
recognised.

What was the old card? You wouldn't happen to have a motherboard with "on
board" sound hardware and the "card" is just a riser card for the speaker
and microphone sockets, would you?

It had an onboard sound system, it went bad, so I bought a PCI sound card
and I can't remember what brand. a few months later I Got a new PC, and so
it was stored in the closet for a year. I just set it up in my sons room and
noticed it was crackling, garbled, distorted noise on all system sounds
(startup, shutdown etc...) and games, basically all sounds. I checked ,the
speakers are ok, so I tried the new card. The old device driver in
Management said SoundblasterII Audio, and when I couldn't get the new one
to work any more, I replaced the old card, now it says Crystalfusion, I
think that was the old driver from before (onboard SC, is that possible?)
any way, I disabled the older driver but didn't uninstall it after putting
in the new one, restarted but no wizard .

Should I uninstall the old driver, remove the old card, put in the new card,
install new driver in that order?

Yeah, worth a go, and if that doesn't do it then i'd consider going back to
the idea that the new card is dead. I'd also check your machine bios and see
if it has a feature for CLEAR ESCD in there, in which case I'd use that
feature prior to adding the new card as well.

Clearing it forces it to re-set itself again and should clear any oddities.

As for where you look in the bios - goodness only knows, they all have their
own little ways of hiding settings away.

If you're not used to working with the BIOS then proceed with caution. Don't
change any other settings just because they "look likely", and don't do
anything at all if you're not certain of what will happen.

The motherboard manufacturer's manual will/should describe all bios
settings - defaults plus options. Download a manual if you don't have one to
hand. Try to disable on-board sound in the BIOS...

It's a Compaq Presario (pre HP) and I have never been able to get into the
BIOS, I used to read in newsgroups that ..."You can't get into the BIOS on a
Compaq, they don't want you messing with it"... is that true? if not how do
I get into my BIOS on a pre HP compaq?
