hardware wiz not recognizing ethernet controller

dell dimension 2400 winxp pro sp1

the hardware wizard cannot install the Ethernet controller that came factory
installed in the pc when I bought it from
dell. any ideas on getting the wizard to recognize that? the hardware
wizard has also been unable to install the sm bus controller either. it has
been a few weeks since these 2 items have done this. they both started
showing up in startup at the same time, never one or the other. I have been
disabling
them in device manager as a work around. but why wouldn't the machine
recognize its own factory installed hardware? ideas appreciated as always.

Are you reinstalling Windows? If these hardware components are not
recognized, then you probably have failing hardware. Contact Dell Tech
Support.

yes it did start happening after i re-installed windows for the first time a
few weeks ago. and still/again after i ran install/repair a couple of days
ago. do you think that still indicates hardware failure? or is it perhaps an
intallation error?

I do think you probably have failing hardware. Call Dell Tech Support
and make sure you tell them you have already reinstalled Windows so
they don't try to make you do it again.
