By the way,if you boot from the cd,re-install xp,you
should only loose the hot fixes,updates.wmp9 series,
etc,but installed programs,files,passwords etc.stays
on the hd,xp will open as you left it.

Ihad the same problem.I fixed by turnig my computer off

and unplugging the power cable from the harddrive and re
connecting it. Then restart. Hope it works for you
