Can I upgrade this in steps or do I really need a new motherboard and
CPU at the same time? In other words, are there any new motherboards
that will accept my CPU and let me upgrade to something better in the
future?

Cheap SOYO motherboard
P4 3.0 Prescott CPU (Socket 478)
8X AGP video
2X512 MB DDR 400 RAM.

Thanks,
Josh

My expierence is that very, very few of the people who think that
they'll upgrade before they cant find compatible parts, actually do.
Like all those people who pay all that extra money for a dual processor
board, and then only populate one processor. By the time they think
bout upgrading, they realize that they can get a new, shiny and much
faster system.

The system isn't too shabby. The first thing one needs to
do is to double the amount of installed RAM from the 1 GB
that is already present. Unless there is a real need to go
to a newly-released Core 2 Duo CPU, this system is OK for
another year or so. The opportunity to extend the life of
a Socket 478 CPU has past due to the LGA775 socket.

Hi Josh
How long is a piece of string?????
I always ask the OP for what do they want to use their system.
So, for what purpose do you use your system.
Is there something wrong or not working properly with your current system.
You have a good CPU - I had one two years ago - a hot runner - but would sit
well on say an Msi 865PE-Neo2 Mobo - not that easy to find.
I think your 1024Mb memory is OK.
You give no info re your HHD - I would say 80Gb minimum - but 160 better
still - depends again on your usage.
You give little info re your graphics as well, which can be a possible
improvement. A good sound graphics, if you can still get it, is the Ati
Radeon 9800Pro - its three years old, but was the last GPU to knock nVidia
back on their arxxs. A Sapphire make would be nice. In my opinion, since
then, nVidia have called the shots.
But until you say what you want your system to do, there is little point to
go further.
