Hardware not working after XP upgrade

I was really excited to have purchased XP-Home and quickly completed the installation successfully. However, after running XP for a week, I find that there are things that are not working
1. MY FAN -- because of this, my system sometimes refuses to star
2. My CD/DVD Drive -- I put a CD in the drive and NOTHING happens. I can't even read the contents

This is TOO much of a coincidense. Please help
