Hardware failure

I had a motherboard failure that left my system inop. The processor and
motherboard failed. The drive, with XP SP2 installed, survived the disaster.
I replaced the motherboard and processor, but I cannot run the system. I
get a Windows registration failure. I need to buy another copy of XP in
order to get my system back up. My question; can I unistall the current OS
and install the new OS without loosing all my data and applications? If so
how do I do it?

You boot from the XP CD and do a repair install - of the existing version.
Nothing will be lost. If you uninstall - everything will be lost.

You should not need to purchase another copy of Windows XP in order to get
back up and running. If you are getting denied by product activation, you
should choose telephone activation and contact the clearinghouse. They
should be able to help you out.
