Hardware error 0502 on lexmark 5150 now dell marketed

I have received the error message above, went to Lexmarks
home site and tried to follow their fix, which was
reattaching the decoder strip to the printer carriage.
Well, I have tried and tried, but I would like to get a
more in-depth view of how to do this, such as how to
remove the printer carriage entirely, so I can see what
the back looks like. I am a former dell hardware tech,
so I have experience, but I cannot see behind the
carriage to actually see what I am doing. Posted it on
Dells forum, it was view 6 times but no answers. Help me
please! Thank you!

I have fixed this problem by cleaning and re-lubricating the rail that
the print carriage rides on. I used a silicon lubricant but any good
ligh machine oil should work. As for removing the carriage, good luck.
I'm pretty sure you have to disassemble the entire printer to get it
out. And as for the decoder strip, I believe it's the thin mylar ribbon
cable that attaches to the carriage. If it becomes loose or falls out
you'll get the same 0502 error.

Good Luck,
NRJ

Thank you so much for answering my question. I did find
an excellent kb article on Dells support page. The link
is:http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?
dn=1080620#Sectlink It was very easy to follow since it
had pictures. I repositioned the encoder strip and it is
working fine now. Thanks again.

0502 message also caused by obstructions in the print path

I was recieving the same error message (0502) on my Lexmark 5150, and after I tried the advice on repositioning the decoder strip, the printer still came up with the same code. In addition to the code however, I was noticing that my paper was not getting past the compensating rollers located inside the printer. I decided that there must be something caught in the printer, preventing the paper from passing, so I turned the printer upside down and out came a push pin onto the floor! So, that just goes to show that an obstruction can cause the 0502 message as well as the decoder stip being out of place. The Lexmark technition that I called couldn't figure that out, as he gave me the same information regarding the decoder strip.
