Hardware connect sound doesn't work

Until recently, when I inserted a flash card to download images, I would get
a "hardware connect sound". Same for disconnecting.....
Now its totally silent. I've checked in the control panel and the correct
sounds are shown. And if I test the sound it plays correctly, so its
there....

Does anyone know of a registry value that needs to be checked for this ?
 
Even though you don't hear the sound, can you still upload/download images?
If so, then why worry?
 
this new version of XP seems to have some form of rot where stuff just quits
working and falls off. Just kind of bothers me , what else might be falling
off that I don't know about. Seems there should be some way to correct this
kind of thing No ??
