Hardware acceleration & DirectX 9

PapaJohn very helpfully describes on his site how it can
help to reduce hardware acceleration to notch 3. This
adjustment did seem to help, particularly when editing a
large project. At the end of this explanation I think he
says that if DirectX 9 is in use, this tweaking of the
acceleration is not necessary, but I'm not quite clear on
that.
I have recently downloaded v9 (by the way it's a biggie,
took most of the night on my 56k connection) so I'd like
to check if there is still any need to juggle the
acceleration, or does v9 contain bits that render this no
longer necessary?
Many thanks

Make sure you have a restore point set.... the results vary with the
computer system. In my personal case, DirectX 9 resolved my longstanding
issue... but it may not resolve yours.

Regardless of the version of DirectX being used, checking changes in
hardware acceleration is pretty easy....
