Harddisk offline?

L

Lars R.

I have an ekstra harddisk (Maxtor 6Y120P0), that has been wooking fine until
I (by mistake) cut off the pc's powersupply.

I can't see the drive in explorer, and in the computeradministration-menu
the drive is offline with a red mark/stopsymbol. If I try reactivating the
drive, I get an error.

I have booted the pc with the diognoseprogram from Maxtor, and it seem that
the hardisk driv has not been damaged. I have deleted the driver-file and
let Windows XP reinstall it, but without any result.

All my family-pictures are on the harddisk, so I am desperate for at
solution (I have no backup...) Help, please.

Thanks
Lars
(sorry for my english)

from your description, you should be able to use just about any
software file recovery application to restore the data that was on the
drive.

there are many of these, with WILDLY varying prices, but i know of one
that allows recovery without cost, called Active@ File Recovery. it
can be obtained HERE: http://www.file-recovery.net/download.htm

hmm... it seems that they may have changed that program recently so as
to make you pay money in order to restore data. regardless, you can
get the full version of that or many other programs for under $50, and
they should be able to recover your data. make sure that you use a
trial versino first though, to make sure that the program you buy will
be able to get the data you want!

I've now installed Active@ File Recovery, but with no result. The program
doesn't recognize the lost drive.

Any other suggestion?

Yeah well, the fact of the matter is that VERY few windows
applications will be able to access the drive if Windows itself cannot
(or refuses to) SEE the drive. Here's a thought. Open the computer
case, pull the power and data cables from the affected drive. Reboot
the computer. Then shut down the computer, reattach the cables and
start up again. It's possible that the Windows hardware detect
routine my now detect the drive. Failing that, remove the hard drive,
place it in another computer and see if THAT computer recognizes the
drive.
