Locating a "Missing" Drive path:
(1.) Bios
(a.) IDE Controller enabled (Pri/Sec)
(b.) Channel/Tap detection enabled
-BIOS can "See" the drive
(2.) Device Manager, IDE/ATAPI category
(a.) Correct Channel/Tap enabled
-Check detected operating mode
(3.) Device Manager, Disk Drives category
(a.) Disk is properly enumerated/listed
(3.) Disk Management
(a.) Disk #(x) present
(b.) Partition structure still in tact

Does the bios see the drive? The drives should be listed as the computer
goes through its POST (power on self test). Press del or whatever key your
motherboard manual tels you to press to enter the bios. You can then look
and see if the drive is there. If not listed open the case and check for
loose cable, both power and data. If you dont know how to get into the bios
you probably shouldn't open the case.

And you should learn to mind your tongue, sir. How dare you use such
distasteful language like that directed to Carey Frisch? You have no cause
or right to do so. Especially Carey Frisch. He is extremely responsive to
posters' pleas for help on this and related newsgroups. And his responses
are usually correct & helpful. If he's not always 100% correct, so be it.
Are you, am I? You owe Mr. Frisch an apology.

LOL! He/She is constantly giving incorrect information and, in many cases,
had the poster followed his/her uninformed guidance, it would cost the
poster money. Frisch owes A LOT of people an apology and he or she never,
ever, apologizes.

Yes, I apologize to those posters who come across the
trolls who have nothing better to do than flame the
newsgroup responders. That is why they are in my
blocked sender's list and never read their garbage.

You don't have to make up excuses as to why you're a coward, Carey. It's
obvious.

Not what I said. Again Reading is Fundamental, Carey, http://www.rif.org/
You have never apologized for YOUR mistakes. Get it now or do I need to go
slower?

You can start by apologizing to the OP of this thread for your erroneous
advice.

Cute, Carey. Just because you have a reading comprehension problem doesn't

Get a life Alias, Marty is not required to do whatever Carey suggests. If the
info is wrong then Marty (or whoever) needs to repost and say so. After all,
no one is paying to get the help they get here.

As a peer in this group I most certainly do have the right _and_ the
responsibility.

Especially Carey Frisch.

Yes, and ESPECIALLY for Carey Frisch!
He is extremely responsive to
posters' pleas for help on this and related newsgroups.

His responses are 90% copy/pasted urls that very, very often have
absolutely NOTHING to do with what was asked.
And his responses
are usually correct & helpful.

Horsepucky. They're often off-base and sometimes outright lies. He also
frequently contradicts himself over the same issues.
If he's not always 100% correct, so be it.
Are you, am I?

No, but I freely admit it when I am wrong. He doesn't and niether does
he have the respect for his peers or even fellow MVPs to respond to our
corrections and criticisms.
You owe Mr. Frisch an apology.

No I don't, I don't owe him a damn thing. But you owe it to yourself to
wake up and pay attention to what he does habitually here and quit
letting his title and prolific posting habits fool you. He's an M$
@$$-kissing clown and deserves to be called on his BS postings.

Who made you my net-nanny?

You apparently never read the OPs questions either, and that's the
point, bozo! All you do is hit on a few keywords and paste up whatever
canned answers you've got lined up that the keywords hit on. Sometimes
you actually luck out with that tactic and slap out a fitting answer,
but you still don't actually READ what the OPs are saying.

If I was a real troll I'd be flaming LOTS of people, not just your hammy
butt. You don't know what a troll is. You don't know what criticism and
correction are. You don't know humility and the ability to admit it
openly when you are WRONG. You don't know what respect for your peers
and fellow MVPs is. You get what you deserve. Call it trolling, call it
flaming, call it a pig, the truth is what it is, no matter what you call it.

Get a life Alias,

I have one, thanks. Just curious, though, if I didn't, how would I be able

Marty is not required to do whatever Carey suggests.

Um, he's an MVP and newbies might just think he has sound advice, something
he rarely has.
If the
info is wrong then Marty (or whoever) needs to repost and say so.

Only if it isn't too late.
After all,
no one is paying to get the help they get here.

And that makes using the MVP label and giving out bad advice OK? Please
explain.

He's a slanderous liar Alias, you know that, and this is just another
way of lying and slandering. The good thing about it is that this only
goes to tarnish his credibility further for any honest and discerning
readers. Not only that, it encroaches on the so called "rules of
conduct" for this gorup he so fondly and often posts. Keep it up Carey
boy, you'll get your beloved MVP title stripped sooner or later! LOL!

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the Maxtor site. Run it to see
if it sees the drive and run the diagnostics on the drive if it sees it.

I alsways assume the worst in such cases (i.e. that the HD is failing)
because of the risk of irreversable data loss. The problem could be:
- HD failure
- disconnected power of data cables
- HD disabled in BIOS/CMOS Setup
- interface disabled in BIOS/CMOS Setup
- incorrect addressing or geometry in CMOS Setup
- jumper or IDE vs. S-ATA issues
- corrupted HD, particularly partition info
- hidden behind some other entity, e.g. LAN-mapped letter
- explicitly hidden via registry settings, e.g. TweakUI

F1?!?? Rarely! The majority will require F1 or Del key. Compaqs were
F10. And others were the Esc key.
