Hard drives and lasers

Thinking of fitting a hard drive to an Aculaser 1900, I notice that Epson's
list price is amazingly high. So can a skinflint fit any old IDE drive to
this machine or *must* it be an Epson?
 
The drives all sit in an enclosure that only fits that printer. It is quite
common that the enclosure is different among the same manufacturer and lets
say an Kyocera model A needs a different part from a model B.

The whole thing is just silly.
