Hard Drive usage needed to upgrade?

I am upgrading from Windows ME to XP. I have partitioned 5GB for C: drive. ME has typically taken less than 500MB to install and I know the requirement for XP is at least 1.5GB or more if I have internet access (I do). However, after I load XP and check my C: drive immediately afterwards, it shows that 3.9GB has been used up! After I load my devices (programs onto a separate drive), I am lucky to have 300MB left, and I haven't received the autoUpdates from Microsoft yet.

I should mention that this was a clean install. I formatted C: drive, installed ME, then installed XP. So there shouldn't be any unnecessary files taking up space. Is ~ 4GB a typical space requirement for XP upgrade with internet connection? Thanks

Hi Mat,

If you are not too far into it, I would suggest; Go back and re-install XP
clean. You can do this by booting from your XP CD and performing a clean
install. At some point in the installation you will be prompted to insert
your ME disk to prove qualification for upgrade. This way, you will have no
ME files on the machine.

As far as the size of your system partition; It will take about 4 gigs for
XP to live comfortably. That is just XP+SP1+Hotfixes and breathing space for
defrag, page file, etc. By the time you install app's that you may want in
the same folder and some app's that will not install to another
folder,(without some real manipulation), you may find yourself using up
close to 6 gigs before you know it.

Unless you are really into file shuffling, I would suggest that you have at
least a 6 gig boot partition. This is just a recommendation based on my own
experience and reading other peoples posts to this and other NG's.
