my bios is telling me my smart status is bad and to replace hard drive. My
question is that the specifications call my hard drive a ultra dma. Is that
equivilant to or comprable to a sata drive?

No, Ultra DMA refers to the data transfer method from the hard drive to
memory.

For information about your hard drive type and S.M.A.R.T. status then:
Try HD Tune, provides drive info and has an option to test your drive.

It's comparable to SATA but not interoperable. If you're replacing a
faulty UDMA drive, replace it with a new UDMA drive.
