Hard Drive Renamed

A

Alan Brown

A friend had a Western Digital WD400 hard drive on his machine. One day it
suddenly stopped working. On investigation the BIOS on my computer shows it
as WDC ROM Model --SABRE--

It looks like a virus or something has renamed the drive. Is that possible?
How do I rename the drive and recover the data? I've sent a cople of emails
to Western Digital with no reply.

Thanks

Hardly a virus. Most likely it was picked up via S.M.A.R.T.

I've been reading about S.M.A.R.T., why / how would it change the name? It
seems to be a utility to give warning about a problem that is about to
happen. Is this disc doomed? How would I recover the data?

SMART is built into the BIOS and communicates with the hard drive directly to determine the
drive parameters and it could easily get a string from the BIOS of the hard disk and use
that to display it as a line item in the CMOS configuration of the system/motherboard BIOS.
It isn't just relagated to eminate drive failure notification.

What are you assuming this is bad ?
Why are you coming to a gloom/doom conclusion ?

Still unsure...
