Hard drive reformat

When my computer crashed, at the advice of my computer
guy, I reformatted the hard drive and completely re-
installed Windows XP. Now, with nothing loaded but
Windows, my hard drive shows 44 Gb used space (out of
180Gb total). I can't find any files or programs (since
they were all supposedly wiped out) that would be
consuming that much of my hard drive. My computer guy
cannot figure it out either. I really don't need the
extra hard drive space, my concern is that the hidden
Giga-bytes will make the computer unstable or slow it
down, and it just doesn't seem right. I have Pentium 4,
3.2 Ghz processor. Any suggestions?

A clean install of Windows XP doesn't come close to occupying 4.4 GB, much
less 44 GB. I'm sure your computer guy meant well, but he didn't do a clean
install.

I got a hunch that instead of formatting the drive, you just re-installed
Windows. I would suggest you see the following link for instructions on a
clean install. Disconnect everything from your computer except the mouse,
keyboard , and monitor. Follow the instructions and then go find a new
"computer guy".
