hi

I was connecting my Palm, for the first time, to my
computer and my second hard drive got disconnected. I
managed to reconnect my hard drive but now it has lost it
data (when i click my D drive it asks me to format the
drive). In SYSTEM RESTORE it says my hard drive is
offline. How can I retrieve all the information (my
university work over the past 4 years) and not loose
anything.

Thanks for your help

Oliver

First I would re-connect it again, does not sound right,
second I would remove that drive and try it in another
machine, third I would put it in a Ziploc bag and put it
in a freezer for a couple hours, re-connect and see if it
can be read and remove the data quick if it can.

Whoever suggested putting your hd in a freezer is obviously trying to make
things worse than they already are for you. I don't see any advantage
whatsoever in causing condesation to form inside the hard-drive.

Define what you mean by "disconnected." i.e. Were you rummaging around
inside the machine and dislodged the ide/signals ribbon/cable? If so, make
sure all cables are properly connected, and that IDE ribbons are connected
the right way around if there's no "lug" on the connector and socket to
prevent connecting them the wrong way around. Make sure that the red or bue
stripe on IDE ribbon cable goes from pin1 on the board to pin1 on the
hard-disk:- striped side goes nearest the power connector.

If the drive has failed irrecoverably, it's a bit late in the day for
lecturing you on backups and data-loss prevention procedures, and
disk-doctors cost quite a bit of money. Doubtless you've obviously already
had that sinking feeling because you never backed up your data.

I conntected my palm and then switch on my computer, when
i click my computer, my D drive said Local Disk. It
normally has another name. I connected my palm to my USB
connection.
I have a back up on a floppy (but not all my docs), i had
a system restore to a point but it will not work, it says
d drive parameter incorrect. It seems that my d drive has
become the hard drive of my palm. That's what i don't
understand. Everything else is fine. my c drive has not
been affected in anyway nor has a programme
malfunctioned. The hard drive has been in my computer for
6 months. it is just when i connected my palm that
everything went pearshape.

i.e. Were you rummaging around
