My new computer came with XP preinstalled. So I do not have an
Windows Disks. I was only able to create a recovery disk

XP partitioned my 40 GB hard drive into a 37 gb "C" drive and a 5 G
"D" drive. I want a smaller "C" drive and increase the "D" drive an
possibly add a small "E" drive. I will be using an external drive fo
storage. I have attempted to find the "Set up" portion of XP with n
suces

How do I partition, since XP does not offer FDISK ????

It's just as well that WinXP does not offer fdisk.exe - it would
destroy your existing partitions while doing its job!

Acronis Disk Director is another product you could use to
repartition your disk.

Does the WinXP disk manager allow you to resize
existing partitions? Non-destructively?

Hypothetically, If I were installing XP on an existing partitione
hard drive...would it not attempt to install itself onto drive "c" n
matter what size it was??? Therefore why can't I partition the har
drive before reinstalling the restoration disk???

because of the software being preinstalled??? I am understanding
other information which I have read, that partitioning is actuall
controllable within a full version of windows XP??????...I seem t
have read in several other documents, that the partitioning i
accomplished with the "set up" portion of the instillation proces
contained on Disk #1 of the XP program ????

I have attempted to use the disk manager...It allowed me to delet
the logical drive "D", But would not allow access to the primar
drive "C"..My guess was because it was active...and I could no
figure out how to inactivate the primary partition....

If your Windows XP is on a "system recovery" CD provided by the
computer manufacturer then these typically do a total "slash and burn"
operation by deleting all repeat all of the existing partitions on the
hard drive, creating a new single partition, and then putting a clean
copy of the Windows XP factory image onto that partition.

Good luck
