Hard Drive Partitioning

P

Paul Forrest

Need Help! I have installed a 200 Gig Western Digital
Hard drive as a slave to my 30 Gig Maxtor. I have
partitioned the 200 Gig Hard Drive into 137 and 63
respectively. My computer only recognizes the first
partition of 137 and not the other 63. What could be
causing this problem? I want to be able to access the
other partition and can't.

Please help.
Thank you.

Paul, I just had the same problem as you. I discovered
that Windows XP (and prior OS's) have a 137 GB limit on
disk size due to their 28 bit disk addressing scheme. Win
XP Service Pack 1 allows higher disk capacities but it's
not enough to just install SP1.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;303013.

I just bought a Maxtor 200 GB disk and, after following
all of their instructions including using their special
ATA/133 PCI card, am now able to see all 200 GB. See their
discussion on this at http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-
bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=960.

However, on a different machine I have a Western Digital
160 GB disk and still can only see 137 GB, so I don't have
all the answers.

Good luck,
Deac

Aha, I got it to work. That is, I got Win XP with SP1 to
recognize all of my Western Digital 160 GB disk. The
answer was in the references of my previous response
(Response 1 below), but I'll summarize it here.

1. Install SP1 for Windows XP. (see Ref 1 for details)

2. Upgrade atapi.sys to version 5.1.2600.1135. (Details in
Ref 1)

3. Reboot and you'll see all of your large hard disk. I
used Partition Magic to increase the size of my 137 GB
partition to the full 160 GB.

Which version of WinXP did you have - Home or Pro?
