This weekend, my computer got the ugly Microsoft blue screen. The only way
around it was to reboot the computer, again only way around was a reboot.

I took the drive out, and pulled documents off of it, and then put it back
in the computer. I put in the Dell Re-Install disk, and it tells me it can
not find the harddrive.

I pulled it back out, and reformated it, and re-installed it. Same thing,
can not find harddrive.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks

Does the system BIOS find it? Sometimes clearing hte CMOS can help with
this.

What interface technology does the drive use ( PATA or SATA ) ?
If you enter BIOS setup, does the drive appear in it's autodetect
table ? Most times the BIOS will show the drives model identifier,
such as ST3320620AS for a Seagate SATA 250 Gigabyte.

When you pulled the drive to retrieve the data did you reset the pen from
master to slave and forgot to change it back?

How do you clean the CMOS?

I did not have to move any pins, but I will check that it didn't come loose
when I took it out.

It depends on your system. On laptops, remove the AC adapter and the
battery and hold the power switch down for about a minute.

On desktops, you open the case, remove the battery (looks like a quarter)
and move the CMOS CLEAR jumper, which is marked. Check the manual for your
system.

You can also try just going into the CMOS and forcing a rescan, but this
isn't always effective.
