hard drive misreports usage

I just installed a new hard drive for a friend. I put
windows xp pro with service pack one on the new hard
drive. The installation went without a glich, and so did
the 1\2 dozen applications. This new hard drive is a 40
gig western digital. When I went to see how much hard
drive space was left unused, windows reported about 37
gigs used. This is impossible, at the most less than 10
gigs are being used. The drive is using NTFS for its file
system. Where is the problem here?

Could you recheck that in Disk Management?

Right Click "My Computer", select 'manage' then click on "Disk Management"
under the "Storage" list.

Your available drives should appear with full info on Status, Capacity, Free
Space, % Free etc.

The full capacity of an *advertised* 40Gb (manufacturers definition) drive
will be reported as 37.26Gb in most OS for reasons that you may already know
but can be explained if necessary.

Hope that helps
Pete
